When it comes to the world of denim, everybody knows Levi Strauss. The ever-popular jean source was founded in 1853 and today, you can find its headquarters in San Francisco, California.
From distressed skinny jeans to pin striped overalls, Levi Strauss has got it all. But now they can add another aspect to their highly acclaimed brand name—they’ve seriously stepped on board the sustainability train in order to reduce the environmental impact of garment production after the consumer takes it home.
According to the Levi’s website,
“58% of the energy and 45% of the water used during the lifetime of a pair of Levi’s jeans occurs during the consumer use phase. This is huge and we know it. So we’ve initiated a global dialogue with consumers—Care for Our Planet—about how caring for their clothes affects the environment.”
In regards to the way that consumers take care of their garments, the Levi’s Care for Our Planet initiative encourages;
1. Wash less, wash in cold water, line dry when possible, and donate clothing to charity when no longer needed
2. Participate in Care to Air—a contest that aims to find a better way to air dry jeans
3. Increase the life cycle of a pair of jeans by donating them instead of contributing to the “23.8 billion bounds of clothing that ends up in landfills each year.” Consequently, Levi’s has partnered up with Goodwill.
As if Levi Strauss doesn’t already deserve a pat on the back….they’ve also generated a
$100,000 denim insulation fund, encouraging partners in the community to take on recycled denim initiatives. In addition, the Levi’s team has started creating alliances in the industry in order to leverage the power of their brands to amp up the use of sustainably produced cotton, which uses less water and pesticides.
